Seeing this colorful, playful art—often featuring heart-stealing, whimsical canines—around Chico for the past few years, I’ve wondered about the artist. During a recent visit to Dr. Karen Escott (local Chico chiropractor extraordinaire), I noticed a few pieces adorning her office walls and decided to do some investigation (being an art- and animal-lover and having a naturally-nosey nature) to get some background on the artist.
A visit to the artist’s website was fun. Her name is Jean Summerville, and, along with lots of samples of her lively art, she has a fun and fanciful website “bio”:
I LOVE DOGS
I LOVE COLOR
I LOVE FLOWERS
I LOVE TO DRAW
I LOVE TO LAUGH
I LOVE FRESH AIR
I LOVE SALAD
I LOVE COZY SOCKS
I LOVE LIBERTY
I LOVE YOU
Do you love me?
When I emailed Jean to ask permission to feature her art on my blog—to which she graciously agreed—I asked for a few words about her as an artist. She has this to say: “I offer you playful, colorful, whimsical, love-spreading, giggle-creating, life-giving dog and flower art for you and yours. Be good and play nice!” Just further evidence of a warm, fun-loving, creative nature.
Along with wall art, Jean offers greeting cards, t-shirts and necklaces and also works on a commission basis, in case you have a favorite four-legged buddy you’d like immortalized in vibrant, other-worldly colors. Jean has also been known to branch out into other art forms…witness her tribute to Susan B. Anthony in the photo montage of Chico’s Art Benches (scroll down to the bottom to view her creation…and enjoy the other fabulous works by local artists along the way).
In addition to her website, Jean’s art is available locally at TrailBlazer and Canine Connection.
Another talented Chicoan doing her wonderfully artsy thing…keep up the dog-gone good art, Jean!
